Cosmetic Surgery Legislation – Is it Necessary?

There has been plenty of talk in the media recently about the need for cosmetic surgery legislation. Some people worry that there isn’t enough outside control of the industry, resulting in a greater number of avoidable injuries, complications, disfigurements, and in extreme cases, death.

Much of this is due to the death of Donda West, mother to musician Kanye West. Donda passed away in 2007 shortly after receiving a breast reduction and abdominoplasty. Complications that arose during the procedure are attributed as a possible cause of death. Although the autopsy suggested heart disease was the ultimate culprit.

Since the untimely death of Donda West, members of her family have been attempting to pass a bill that requires potential plastic surgery patients to undergo a medical clearance before being admitted for surgery. The logic behind this bill is that it will help prevent negligent cosmetic surgeons from operating on unfit patients.

The bill would also discourage patients from seeking multiple opinions until he or she is able to find a willing surgeon. Donda was turned away by one surgeon for being an unsuitable candidate for plastic surgery, but was accepted by another. This tragedy has caused some to believe that cosmetic surgery legislation is necessary to ensure people’s safety.

Although legislation might bring about some change in the industry, patients themselves need to be aware and responsible when choosing a surgeon and undergoing any surgical procedure. One way to reduce risks is by choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Cosmetic surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) must have graduated from an accredited medical school, completed a five-year residency, have three years of experience practicing general surgery, pass an oral and written exam, and have two years active cosmetic surgery practice. 4. Through the navel: Yes, through the navel. It sounds crazy, but it’s true. One small incision is made around the edge of the belly button, so the scar is tiny and hard to detect. Most importantly, no scarring of the breasts occurs. Another plus for this incision site is that the incision typically heals very well and faster than the other techniques.

Of course, how you take care of the site also determines how noticeable the scar will be. First and foremost, follow all of your surgeon’s after-care instructions. This includes icing the site to help with the swelling. After a breast augmentation, absolutely no lifting or straining because this can pull the sutures or reopen the incision if it is not completely healed. There are silicon sheets that can be placed over the incisions that help reduce the appearance of the scars. Vitamin E is also another option for treating the area.

There are many different types of facelifts available today, but the most common is the traditional surgical facelift.

A traditional face lift is the process of surgically removing excess fat and skin from the face by cutting and stretching it. A surgeon will typically make an incision in or above the hairline that extends down in front of the ear, goes below the ear, and up the backside of the ear ending in the hairline again. The skin is then lifted up off the muscles and connecting tissues so the surgeon can remove any unwanted fatty deposits. There are some risks associated with the facelift procedure. All of these effects seem to be quite rare though. The most common outcome of the facelift is that more cosmetic surgeries become necessary to keep up the results. Face lifts are certainly not for the fainthearted, but they can offer younger looking skin for up to ten years, a benefit that may well outweigh any risks for those seeking to outsmart the aging process.
